Description

The Sigillum Dei, also known as the Seal of God or Signum Dei Vivi, is a magical diagram that held great significance in the works of John Dee, the renowned Elizabethan mathematician and occult philosopher. In his explorations of angelic magic and divine communication, Dee referred to this diagram as the Sigillum Dei Aemeth, emphasizing its association with truth.

The Sigillum Dei is composed of two circles, a pentagram, two heptagons, and a heptagram. It bears the names of God and his angels, serving as a powerful symbol with transformative capabilities. According to ancient sources such as the Liber Juratus, it was believed that the Sigillum Dei granted its destined magician the ability to possess the Spirit of God and become God-like among humanity and creation. It facilitated communication with spirits, angels, and archangels, control over elements, creatures’ holy spirits, and even the power to manipulate light.

Although the Sigillum Dei had roots in Jewish tradition, its use expanded beyond religious boundaries. Dee’s interest in the practical application of this seal, facilitated by his collaborator Edward Kelley, distinguished his approach. While scholars like Athanasius Kircher approached it from a scholarly perspective, Dee sought to harness its power for magical purposes, aligning it with his broader explorations of alchemy, angelic communication, and the hidden realms of knowledge.
