Description

John Dee (1527-1608) was an English mathematician, astronomer, astrologer, and occult philosopher who made significant contributions in various fields during the Elizabethan era. Known as the “Queen’s Conjurer,” Dee was deeply interested in alchemy, hermeticism, and the occult sciences. He believed that hidden knowledge could be unlocked through the study of mathematics and communication with celestial beings.

Dee is also known for his collaboration with Edward Kelley, a medium and alchemist. Together, they conducted scrying sessions and claimed to communicate with angels. These spiritual encounters resulted in the creation of the Enochian language, a system of angelic communication. Their partnership was a complex one, marked by both extraordinary revelations and personal conflicts.

Throughout his life, Dee sought to uncover the secrets of the universe, delving into the realms of divination, cryptography, and the natural sciences. He authored numerous works on mathematics, astrology, and philosophy, including “Monas Hieroglyphica,” his treatise on symbolic language.

Dee, a devout Christian, was deeply influenced by the prevalent Hermetic and Platonic-Pythagorean teachings during the Renaissance. These influences shaped his religious beliefs, emphasizing the significance of numbers as the foundation of knowledge. Inspired by Hermeticism, Dee embraced the notion that humans possessed the potential for divine power, which could be unlocked through the study of mathematics. His ultimate objective was to reconcile the divisions between the Roman Catholic and Protestant churches and restore the original theological wisdom of ancient times, with the aim of establishing a unified world religion.
