Description

The Sigillum Dei, also known as the Seal of God or Sigillum Dei Aemeth, is a powerful magical diagram described in John Dee’s works. It consists of two circles, a pentagram, two heptagons, and a heptagram, all inscribed with the names of God and angels. This angelic seal holds significant magical properties, allowing the intended magician to access divine power and commune with spirits, angels, and archangels. It grants control over the elements, all creatures’ holy spirits except for the Archangels, and even light itself. The Sigillum Dei is believed to enable the user to become God or the “Living” God among humanity and creation, possessing the true benefic vision of God.

John Dee, along with his medium Edward Kelley, received the authoritative description of the seal in 1582. While Dee had scholarly and antiquarian interests in the Sigillum Dei, his focus was primarily on its practical application rather than mere academic study. This contrasts with figures like Athanasius Kircher, who sought to understand the various religious and cultural aspects associated with the seal. Dee’s involvement with the Sigillum Dei reflects his deep involvement in angelic magic and his pursuit of hidden knowledge.
