Description

The Mimick is a fascinating creature mentioned in Edward Topsell’s The History of Four-Footed Beasts (1607). According to Topsell’s accounts, the Mimick is a creature with extraordinary mimicry skills. It has the ability to imitate the appearance, sounds, and behaviors of other animals, often to deceive or confuse its prey or predators.

Topsell’s descriptions of the Mimick mention its incredible adaptability and survival tactics. Namely, that the Mimick can transform its appearance to resemble ‘anything it seeith’. Presumably, this camouflage allows the Mimick to approach unsuspecting prey or avoid being detected by potential threats.

Some have thought the Mimick to be descended from Apes – ‘for in wit and disposition it resembleth an ape, but in face sharp and black like a hedgehog, having a short recurved body, very long legs, shaggie hair, and a short tail.’

There were apparently many Mimicks in Egypt in the time of King Ptolemy, which were ‘taught to leap and play, and dance at the hearing of musick, and in many poor mens houses they served instead of servants’.

There is also mention of a Mimick that ate poisoned food, and survived.
