Illustration from the title page of Elias Ashmole’s Theatrum Chemicum Brittanicum depicting an eagle, a snake and a toad involved in some mysterious alchemical mischief. The toad holds a crescent moon in its mouth and the snake appears to hold a solar disc. An eagle flies above, and drops of liquid fall all around.
The toad often represents ‘prime matter’ – an indeterminate and featureless substance, lacking specific qualities or characteristics. It is often described as an undifferentiated state or potentiality that can be shaped and refined through alchemical processes to give rise to different forms and substances.
The Latin inscription reads “Serpens et Bufo gradiens sup terra(m), Aquila volans, est nostru(m) Magisteriu(m)” which translates as “the Serpent and the Toad walking upon the earth, the Eagle flying, is our Mastery”. Mighty stuff!
