Description

The triple spiral pattern appears in many prehistoric cultures, and the examples from the famous megalithic tomb of Newgrange in Ireland are among the finest and most iconic. While geometric decorations like these are motifs often associated with ‘Celtic’ culture, the examples from Newgrange (Neolithic period, c. 3200 BCE) pre-date later Iron Age Celtic artefacts by many thousands of years.

This design shows the iconic triple spiral from inside the chamber of Newgrange, engraved on one of the upright stones (orthostat C10) in the end-chamber. You can see other spiral designs in the mazes and spirals section.

Newgrange, known as Sí an Bhrú in Irish, stands as a prehistoric structure situated in County Meath, Ireland, overseeing the River Boyne from an elevated position, approximately 8 kilometers (5.0 miles) to the west of Drogheda. Constructed during the Neolithic era around 3200 BC, Newgrange predates both Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids. It is aligned to capture the sunrise during the winter solstice. As the primary feature within the Brú na Bóinne complex, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Newgrange is accompanied by the passage tombs of Knowth and Dowth, as well as various henges, burial mounds, and standing stones.

In Celtic tradition, the triskelion signifies the interconnectedness of life, death, and rebirth, encapsulating the cyclical nature of existence. Moreover, the triskelion’s presence in ancient cultures like those of Greece, Sicily, and Brittany underscores its universality, symbolizing cosmic forces and cosmic order. As a spiritual symbol, the triskelion invites contemplation of the rhythms and cycles that shape our reality, inspiring individuals to find harmony amidst life’s perpetual changes.
