Description
According to medieval historian Gerald of Wales, King Henry II received information from a Welsh bard about the location of King Arthur’s grave. Acting on this information, the monks of Glastonbury Abbey uncovered a log coffin between two stone pyramids in the abbey cemetery. At a depth of 16 feet, they found a stone slab cover with an unusual cross attached to its underside, bearing a Latin inscription identifying the occupants as King Arthur and his queen, Guinevere.
The Latin inscription reads ‘HIC IACET SEPULTUS INCLITUS REX ARTHURIUS IN INSULA AVALONIA’ which translates as ‘HERE LIES BURIED THE FAMOUS KING ARTHUR IN THE ISLE OF AVALON’.
