The mug features both the original, and the modern version of the Westbury White Horse as they appeared in the first edition of the classic The White Horses of the West of England with Notices of Some Other Ancient Turf Monuments<\/em> by the Rev. W. C. Plenderleath (1885. Alfred Russell Smith, London, and Alfred Heath, Calne)<\/p> <\/p> The first image (Fig.6) represents the original White Horse (possibly Anglo-Saxon in origin). The second (Fig.7) is Plenderleath's illustration of the 'modern' version. Recent discoveries suggest that the plate that printed the 'ancient' horse design was reversed in error, so most images you'll see of the original horse show it facing right.
