A handy elastic pen loop and the closure band are also recycled.<\/strong><\/p><p><\/p><p>Inspired by a woodcut illustration of <strong>The Manured Medlar <em>(Mespilus)<\/em><\/strong> from <em>The Herball, or Generall Historie of Plantes<\/em> (John Gerard, London 1597).<\/p><p><\/p><p><strong>The medlar,<\/strong> once a beloved feature of medieval orchards, is now all but forgotten \u2014 though in its time, it was prized for both its fruit and its symbolism.<\/p><p>Cultivated since Roman times and grown widely across Europe, the medlar\u2019s curious brown fruit cannot be eaten when first picked; it must be left to soften and darken \u2014 a process known as <em>bletting<\/em> \u2014 until its sharpness mellows and the flesh turns rich, soft, and sweet. This unusual ripening gave rise to its many colourful nicknames, including the \u201copen-arse\u201d fruit, a name used both in Chaucer\u2019s <em>Canterbury Tales<\/em> and Shakespeare\u2019s plays, where it often stood in for aging, decay, or earthy humour.<\/p><p>In medieval and early modern times, medlars were turned into jellies, conserves, and even spiced wines, their flavour appreciated by those with patience and taste for the unconventional.
