The design is based on a woodcut illustration of The male and female Mandrake<\/strong> from The Herball, or Generall Historie of Plantes<\/em> (John Gerard, London 1597).<\/p> <\/p> The mandrake is a real plant native to the Mediterranean, long associated with magic, medicine, and folklore. Its thick, forked root often resembles a human figure, which helped fuel myths about its powers \u2014 including the belief that it screamed when uprooted, killing anyone who heard its cry.<\/p> <\/p> In Renaissance herbals, the mandrake is often shown as having both male and female forms. According to the \u201cdoctrine of signatures,\u201d natural forms were thought to mirror their effects on the human body.
