The text refers to the appearance of “a great wonder in heaven, a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet” and “a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns.” In Blake’s image the powerful, muscular dragon, associated with Satan, looms menacingly over a radiant woman, seeking to destroy her unborn child.

Through film and popular culture this image has become familiar to many. ‘The Great Red Dragon and the Woman Clothed in Sun’ depicts an intense battle between good and evil. A radiant, golden woman stands on the sun and moon with a crown of twelve stars on her head, being threatened by a seven-headed, ten-horned red dragon representing Satan.

This powerful, visionary image can also be read as Blake’s expression of the tumult and anger of his own era, a time of international conflict and both the fear and thrill of revolution, as the universal battle between good and evil.

Organic cotton tote bag. 170 gsm twill weave. 37 x 42 cm.
