The design is based on a woodcut illustration of The common Elder tree<\/strong> from The Herball, or Generall Historie of Plantes<\/em> (John Gerard, London 1597).<\/p> <\/p> The elder tree has long held a special place in British and European folklore - a hedge-side guardian, a healer, and a doorway between worlds. Often found growing near cottages or along wild boundaries, it was said to be protected by the Elder Mother, a watchful spirit who must be asked permission before any branch was cut. To fell an elder tree without due respect was to invite misfortune, and elder groves were thought to mark liminal spaces - thresholds between the seen and unseen.<\/p> <\/p> Despite its cautionary magic, the elder was beloved for its gifts. The frothy white elderflowers, gathered in early summer, were used to make soothing cordials and light wines, while the dark, drooping clusters of elderberries were brewed into syrups, tinctures, and medicinal wines to ward off winter chills.
