{"id":8921166,"uuid":"a118350b-874a-4962-818e-d9a8777d7546","name":"Pictish Beast (Rodney's Stone) Top","description":"<p><strong>Pictish Stones<\/strong> are carved stones created by the ancient Picts in north-east Scotland between the 6th and 9th centuries, decorated with distinctive symbols.<\/p><p>The <strong>Pictish Beast<\/strong> appears exclusively on Pictish stones and is among the most common animal symbols in Pictish art. Usually depicted with a curved body, long jaws, and a distinctive crest, it often appears to be shown in motion, as if swimming. Although its meaning remains uncertain, it has been interpreted as a marine animal such as a dolphin or whale, possibly inspired by creatures seen along the Scottish coast, or as a creature of myth. In either case the Beast was clearly an important symbol for the Picts.<\/p><p>This design is based on the Pictish Beast carved on <strong>Rodney\u2019s Stone<\/strong>, a Class II Pictish cross-slab from Moray now standing near Brodie Castle.
