According to the \u201cdoctrine of signatures,\u201d natural forms were thought to mirror their effects on the human body. The fact that the root supposedly resembled an entire human made it particularly sought after as a highly potent ingredient in ancient medicine and mysticism, often with regard to fertility.<\/p>
