The Rollright Stones: Rock Legends!
The Rollright Stones of Oxfordshire - an ancient stone circle, standing stone, and dolmen linked to the legend of a King, his Knights, and a witch's curse.

Set high on the border of Oxfordshire and Warwickshire, the Rollright Stones form one of Britain’s most atmospheric prehistoric landscapes. The complex comprises three distinct megalithic monuments, each built in a different phase of the late Neolithic and early Bronze Age and each with its own role within a long tradition of ritual on this ridge of the Cotswolds.

To the east lies the Whispering Knights, the surviving stones of a collapsed portal dolmen or burial chamber, dating to the early or middle Neolithic period. Some four hundred metres to the west stands the King’s Men, a stone circle about thirty-three metres across, raised perhaps two millennia later and built from the same local oolitic limestone. Beyond the road, a solitary pillar known as the King Stone completes the trio - a standing stone possibly marking a Bronze Age grave or ceremonial site. Together they illustrate a sequence of prehistoric belief that extended, almost unbroken, from the fourth to the second millennium BCE.

The Whispering Knights, one of three monuments that make up the Rollright Stones

Archaeologists have shown that the boulders were gathered from the slopes below, hauled uphill on wooden sledges and set into place with surprising economy of labour. The King’s Men would once have formed a near-perfect ring of close-fitting stones, smooth faces turned inward to enclose a space for ceremony. The dolmen of the Whispering Knights, now fallen, was originally capped by a single massive slab, and the King Stone, weathered and scarred by centuries of attention, may once have weighed nearly five tonnes. Despite the difference in date and form, all three monuments share the same pale, granular limestone and the same commanding view toward the valleys of the Stour and the Swere.

The names of these monuments descend not from prehistory but from local folklore. The tale recorded by the antiquary William Camden tells of a travelling king, his army, and a witch - later identified with Mother Shipton - who met them on this high ground. She challenged the king with a riddle and a test of fate:

Seven long strides thou shalt take, says she,
And if Long Compton thou canst see,
King of England thou shalt be!

Confident, the king strode forward. But the rising ground hid the distant village of Long Compton from his view. The witch’s laughter sealed his doom:

As Long Compton thou canst not see, King of England thou shalt not be!
Rise up stick and stand still stone, For King of England thou shalt be none;
Thou and thy men hoar stones shall be, And I myself an elder tree!

With that, the king became the King Stone, his soldiers the ring of King’s Men, and four plotting knights who had lagged behind were fixed forever as the Whispering Knights. The witch herself took root as an elder tree on the hillside. Generations repeated the story, sometimes whispering that the stones still move when the wind changes or that they cannot be counted the same way twice.

Later tradition added new layers. It was said that at midnight on certain saints’ days the king and his men came to life again, or that young women who ran around the circle on midsummer’s eve might glimpse the face of a future husband. In the nineteenth century, childless wives were reported to visit the lonely King Stone, praying or touching it for fertility. The notion that the stones whisper, wander, and dance persisted well into modern times.

The Rollright Stones in William Camden's Britannia

Serious study began with the early modern antiquaries. John Aubrey, William Camden, and William Stukeley all recorded the stones, often through the lens of biblical or classical comparison. Victorian investigators restored fallen stones and proposed astronomical alignments, while twentieth-century excavation, led by George Lambrick for the Inspectorate of Ancient Monuments, produced the first rigorous account of the site’s geology, construction, and sequence. Lambrick concluded that the monuments, though separated by centuries, formed part of a continuous sacred landscape maintained by successive communities.

Here at Eldon Threads we’d been wanting to create something featuring The Rollright Stones for a long time - ideally a design that included all three monuments, and not just The King’s Men stone circle. Back in July, we began creating a ‘top down’ plan of the site, similar to the one we made for Castlerigg, Callanish, and more recently Stonehenge and The Hurlers, but to fit everything in would have meant taking massive liberties with either the distances, or the sizes of the stones themselves.

The Rollright Stones from the 1600’s, and the 1800’s

Then by chance we stumbled across Henry Taunt’s book from the 1880’s - The Rollright Stones : The Stonehenge of Oxfordshire. Chapter 1 has the most lovely illustration which shows all three monuments and a beautiful curving title hand-drawn in a rustic styled typeface. When we first saw it, we knew it would look great on a t-shirt - from a distance you could almost mistake the words for ‘The Rolling Stones’! It definitely had the feel of a rock band’s t-shirt (or folk maybe?) like vintage merch for an old Fairport Convention tour!

We didn’t realise until we started reading Taunt’s book, that his illustration was closely based on a much earlier original from Robert Plot's The Natural History of Oxford-shire (1677). We ended up using elements from both drawings for our own Eldon Threads version - lovingly restored and adjusted slightly to give everything a bit of breathing space. We reckon it looks fantastic on our 100% organic t-shirts and hoodies. (Did we mention recently that all our stuff is printed using sustainable methods, renewable energy, and suchlike?)

Here’s the t-shirt. We were staying in Balscote, near Banbury, and had been told the legend - including the claim that the stones can never be counted the same way twice. Certain that it must be easy to prove otherwise, I left a marker beside one of the King’s Men and began counting. Twice. Sure enough, I ended up with a different total each time. So that part of the legend is definitely true!

As well as curious schoolkids like I once was, The Rollright Stones continue to inspire many different communities. Archaeologists, historians, artists, and modern Pagans all find meaning here. Ritual offerings and seasonal ceremonies still occur, echoing across the same ridge where farmers, builders, and storytellers have gathered for over five thousand years. The stones have featured in literature, television, and music - ensuring their presence in both scholarly and popular culture.

Viewed together, the Whispering Knights, the King’s Men, and the King Stone embody the long continuum of belief that links death, memory, and place. The burial chamber speaks of ancestors; the circle marks communal rites; the solitary monolith, perhaps, commemorates a single life. Around them swirl stories of kings and witches, of voices in the wind, of stones that refuse to stand still. Whether approached as archaeology or legend, the Rollright Stones remind us how the earliest builders shaped the landscape not merely with labour but with imagination - and how that imagination still endures, weather-beaten but unbroken, on a quiet ridge above Long Compton.

Credits:

Image of The Whispering Knights by midnightblueowl, Wikipedia <a target="_blank"
