Known as the Swastika Stone, it’s one of the most distinctive pieces of prehistoric rock art in Britain.

The Swastika Stone (Ilkley Moor, West Yorkshire)

At first glance, it’s not hard to see how it got its name. The design is made up of four curved arms forming a swirling cross, almost like a spinning wheel. Each arm holds a small cup mark, one of those circular indentations that appear all over Britain’s ancient carved stones. One of the arms extends into an S-shape, giving the whole thing a sense of movement or flow. The design is framed by a double outline and is carved into a flat stone surface that now lies behind a protective railing, alongside a Victorian copy made to help visitors see the pattern more clearly.

The carving itself is impossible to date precisely, but archaeologists tend to place it somewhere in the Neolithic or early Bronze Age — roughly between 3000 and 1800 BCE. That’s the same broad period as many of the cup-and-ring stones found across Rombalds Moor (which includes Ilkley Moor). These markings are often abstract and mysterious — rings, grooves, spirals — and while the exact meanings are lost to time, most researchers agree they were probably ritual or symbolic, rather than decorative.

What sets the Swastika Stone apart is just how unusual the design is in Britain. While the swastika (in its many forms) turns up all over the ancient world — from India to Scandinavia — this is the only known example of a swastika-like motif in British rock art. It’s a complete one-off, at least as far as current archaeology knows.

But here’s where things get even more intriguing.

If you compare the Ilkley carving to certain prehistoric stones in northern Italy — specifically in Val Camonica, Lombardy — the similarity is striking. There, in a region packed with ancient carvings, you’ll find a symbol known as the Camunian rose. It’s made of a looping, swastika-like shape surrounding a cross of cup-marks, sometimes nine in total, arranged in a grid. Some versions are almost identical to what you see on Ilkley Moor.

Camunian rose (Carpene, Sellero, Val Camonica, Italy)

The Camunian rose is usually dated to the Iron Age, several centuries (or even a millennium) later than Britain’s Neolithic rock art. In Italy, the motif may have had solar or spiritual significance, possibly linked to ideas of protection, cosmic order, or cycles of the sun. It’s even been adopted as a modern symbol of Lombardy. So how did something so similar end up in Yorkshire?

One theory — and it’s very much a theory — involves the Lingones, a Celtic tribe originally from Gaul who migrated across the Alps into northern Italy around the 4th century BCE. Some scholars suggest that these people might have adopted the Camunian rose as a kind of tribal or sacred symbol. Fast forward a few centuries, and Roman records tell us that a cohort of Lingones was stationed in Ilkley during the 2nd century CE. An altar stone found in the area confirms their presence, along with a dedication to the local goddess Verbeia.

So, could it be that one of these soldiers — far from home, but carrying memories or cultural symbols from northern Italy — carved a version of the Camunian rose into the local rock? If so, the Swastika Stone wouldn’t be Neolithic at all, but Roman-period, and carved by someone with a foot in two cultural worlds.

It’s a romantic idea, but most archaeologists still lean toward the earlier dating. The carving style fits with other prehistoric markings nearby, and there’s no clear sign of Roman involvement. It’s also possible that the swirling cross is an example of parallel symbolism — the same basic idea or shape turning up in different places, independently, because it meant something similar to many ancient peoples. The swastika, in its oldest forms, is often thought to represent the sun, cycles, life, or energy — all universal concerns.

Whatever the truth, the Swastika Stone remains one of those places where the past refuses to fully reveal itself. It’s not just the design that draws you in, but the feeling that you’re seeing a symbol meant to speak across time - even if we’re still not entirely sure what it was trying to say.

Here at Eldon Threads, we’ve created TWO special designs to celebrate the artistry of the ancient hands that carved the Ilkley Moor Swastika. The first is a faithful recreation of the original carving, printed in white on a range of dark fabrics.

The second design (which we’ve called ‘Ilkley Moor Swastika Stone Design’) is our ‘modern’ version - lovingly re-drawn with fixed-width lines and all of the cup holes as perfect circles, equally spaced to produce the base cross motif. We’ve added some links to the t-shirts at the end of this post - we hope you’ll keep scrolling right to the end :)

Anyway - if you ever find yourself on Ilkley Moor, it's worth taking the detour to Woodhouse Crag. The view’s spectacular, the air’s full of larks, and on a flat slab of ancient rock, someone - four thousand years ago (or perhaps just two thousand?) - left us a message in stone.
